Welcome To The Sky & Space Blog

Hello & welcome to the Sky & Space Blog!

Throughout the ages, discoveries of all shapes and sizes have been driven by the human desire to understand the unknown.

This desire still exists today.

At Sky & Space Products, we are big proponents of encouraging individuals to follow their own path of discovery. In fact, this is the basis for everything we do!

We want to provide useful and relevant tools, resources, and information for all of our followers and we sincerely hope that all of our explorers have a fun and fulfilling time exploring the skies.

In this blog post, we’ll take a more in-depth look at what we are about as a company along with the 4 main things we are trying to do to make the weather & astronomy industry better.

More importantly, you’ll discover why it matters to you.

Let’s take a look.

The Genesis Of Sky & Space Products

Before getting into the details of what makes Sky & Space Products truly special, I’d like to provide a brief background on how the company started.

Sky & Space Products is an e-commerce company I founded out of a desire to help weather and astronomy enthusiasts get better and easier access to great products.

This was a concern that was repeatedly brought up by friends, family, and acquaintances.

Though I already had my hands full managing Bear Country Bees, my family’s beekeeping business, I knew that I needed to do something about this problem.

Thus, Sky & Space Products was founded.

As we’ve moved forward, addressing this problem of product access has grown well beyond just providing easy access to great weather & astronomy products. It’s also become a hub for finding the best weather and astronomy resources available anywhere.

As our company has expanded to this new role, we’ve narrowed our focus down to a single end goal:

To become the best source of equipment, information, tools, and other resources for weather & astronomy enthusiasts.

This journey has taken us far further than we would have ever imagined and we’ve had a great ride while doing it!

That’s our founding story in a nutshell (if you’d like to get the full details, please visit our About page).

Now to the good stuff 🙂

What Was Missing Before Sky & Space Came Along?

Answering this question required us to take an honest look at the industry and identify needed improvements.

From running through this exercise multiple times, we came away with 4 key takeaways:

  1. 1
Weather and astronomy products are often difficult to access both physically and online
  2. 2
Products in this industry can be difficult to figure out how to use and typically don’t come with easy-to-use instruction manuals
  3. 3
Customers are often left to their own devices while using these great (but often, complicated) products which discourages many people from creating their own path of discovery
  4. 4
It can be tough to find diverse product sets in the industry which makes the research process much more in-depth than many people want to deal with

Let’s take a look at each of these in a little more detail. This post is lengthy so if you’d like to skip to individual sections, you can use this handy navigation:

Problem 1: Difficult to Access

As I’ve stated before, there are two specific ways that these products have been difficult to access in the past: physical access and online access.

Your search for great weather & astronomy products can often feel like you've encountered a locked door

Physical Access

Many products in this industry are specialty items that you can’t find at your typical store.

While you can find a basic thermometer at your local Walmart, chances are that you won’t be able to find more advanced weather or astronomy products such as the WeatherFlow Bluetooth Weather Meter or the Levenhuk Skyline PRO 105 MAK Telescope at the same store.

This is compounded by the fact that there are rarely physical stores for these products nearby (if any at all).

Essentially, you’re generally stuck with finding these products online which leads us to the next issue.

Online Access

Most companies these days have a corporate website and it’s expected that every business have one.

Unfortunately, the reality is that most websites in our industry are either hard to find, don’t function well, or both. Either way, this creates a bad experience all around.

If you’re a customer trying to find just the right product but you can’t find it in a physical store and it’s very difficult to find online, you’ll likely end your fruitless search frustrated and disappointed.

Problem 1: Difficult To Access

Many weather & astronomy products are difficult to access both online and in physical stores. Chances are, unless you know exactly what you're looking for and where to find it, you'll run into trouble getting what you need.

Problem 2: Difficult to Use

This problem is frustrating especially if you have purchased a weather and/or astronomy product and are anxious to use your new equipment.

But, alas, you find that all the knobs, dials, settings, and more make it all but impossible to really get good use out of your equipment. Basically, you’re stuck!

Even if you're able to get access to the products you're looking for, figuring out how to use them can seem like deciphering a foreign language.

In this scenario, you’ve likely experience one of two major issues (or a combination of both):

  1. 1
The sheer complexity of the equipment features and settings creates a big learning curve
  2. 2
Lack of high-quality training materials makes it difficult to overcome this learning curve

Let’s briefly look at these in turn.

Part 1: The Learning Curve of Complex Equipment

Science is an amazing, beautiful thing.

When you imagine yourself peering into your own telescope to view the rings of Saturn or using your weather station to predict the next rainfall, it’s hard not to feel a measure of excitement and even awe.

However, there can be a lot of setup to get your equipment just right so that you can get to that level.

When you look at the list of settings and adjustments you need to make to be successful, it can be overwhelming to say the least. Working to get all of these pieces just right takes time, energy, and effort.

In other words, you’ll likely experience a steep learning curve that looks something like this:

The Learning Curve of Complex Equipment

Wouldn’t it be nice if you have a go-to expert that could tell you what those settings needed to be so that you can just focus on seeing those rings of Saturn?

Part 2: Lack of Training Materials

In addition to the initial learning curve you’ll most likely experience, I’m sure you’ll want to get to the more advanced stuff at some point.

However, most of the products in the industry only provide the basics in the manuals that come with them (if they have a manual at all). The instructions are mediocre at best so how do you find a better way to learn about these different products?

And let’s be honest, when was the last time you sat down to read a user's manual just for the heck of it?

Most user manuals that come with weather and astronomy equipment are boring and overly complicated making it difficult (and less fun) for you to begin your exploration.

I hope your answer is “NEVER!”.

Manuals typically aren’t super fun to read, they only have basic designs, and the text is so small that you might have trouble telling the difference between the two knobs you’re supposed to be tweaking to get the best results.

Wouldn’t it be nice instead to have a beautifully designed, easy-to-use training page complete with walkthrough videos to show you how to get more than just the basics out of your equipment?

Problem 2: Difficult To Use

Most weather & astronomy products have a wide array of knobs, dials, and other settings to learn. A steep learning curve and a lack of quality, easy-to-understand training materials, doesn't make this any easier.

Problem 3: Being Left To Your Own Devices

This section builds off of the point above, but it’s so important that I feel it merits additional explanation.

If you’re investing in more advanced equipment, you are most likely going to want the training materials I mentioned above.

There's often very little direction or support available to you beyond what the (unhelpful) user manuals provide.

However, you’re also very likely to want to work with a company that provides stellar customer service. You don’t want to be left in the dust with no directions and no help from a company you just purchased a product from.

Instead, you’ll almost certainly want your choice company to provide the following:

  • At-a-glance and detailed information on all pieces of equipment
  • Setup walkthroughs and usage procedures to explain how to use your chosen tools
  • Timely, thorough responses to your questions or concerns
  • A true sense of community and friendship amongst all enthusiasts where people can learn and grow together (more than just casual social media groups)

Unfortunately, most of these considerations are left out of the equation or are just an afterthought.

Problem 3: Left To Your Own Devices

When you get stuck, you're most often left on your own to guess your way through the complexities of the equipment. Having to figure things out on our own with no direction makes your discovery less fun.

Problem 4: Difficult to Get Product Diversity

This point is pretty straightforward.

If you visit a shop or a website that sells weather or astronomy equipment, you may have noticed that they generally only offer a few, very select products options.

If you want to get everything you need in one place, you’re stuck! Instead, you’re slogging around the Internet looking at every website out there that sound like it sells what you’re looking for.

Many websites/suppliers of weather & astronomy items only have a few product options which isn't helpful when you're looking for something very specific.

Alas, you don’t have time to search each website independently so you try Amazon, but even that turns out to be a bust.

You give up, disappointed and frustrated…again.

You missed out on seeing that comet that you’ve been planning to see for 6 months all because you couldn’t find what you needed easily and in a timely manner.

This is not very helpful if you want access to options.

The ability to choose just the right product, service, or experience is becoming more important than ever. Yet, product selection hasn’t improved much.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have all of the weather & astronomy things you needed all in one place so you didn’t have to deal with this headache?

Problem 4: Difficult To Get Product Diversity

When getting your equipment, you most likely want access to options, but most suppliers don't stock very many products which can severely limit your options.

How Does Sky & Space Address These Problems?

That’s quite the list of problems to overcome.

At this point, you might be asking yourself something like “how can all of these problems be overcome?” or “where would you even start?”

Well, the reality is that these problems aren’t going to be fixed easily nor overnight.

We aren’t anywhere near the perfect solution to these issues yet.

However, I’m also proud to tell you that these are the exact challenges we’re working so hard to fix.

Here are the 4 things that make up our vision to solve these challenges:

  1. 1
Make weather and astronomy products easier for you to access
  2. 2
Provide templated setup/usage instructions for all of the products that we stock, redefine what a “user manual” looks like, and create both basic and advanced learning and discovery resources for you to use
  3. 3
Overhaul and surpass your customer service expectations
  4. 4
Gather as many relevant products and services together in one place to give you the smoothest possible shopping experience

Now, we realize that we won’t be able to address all of these issues at same time. However, we’re up to the challenge of conquering these 4 major undertakings.

Let’s take a brief look at how we plan to accomplish this.

Solution 1: Make Weather & Astronomy Products Easier For You to Access

This is possibly the most challenging problem to tackle especially if you’re the type who likes to visit a physical store to purchase something.

While we would love to provide a storefront sometime in the future (and we do have plans to do so), it’s a little bit out of our reach at this point.

However, we do have the ability to make online shopping more convenient for you with better and easier access to the products you want.

Our partnerships in the industry allow us to provide easier, more convenient access to the products you want most.

With our partnerships in the industry, we can conveniently ship products straight to your door so you don’t have to seek out these sparse specialty stores.*

*Note: certain products do require lead times. For additional details on which products may require lead times, please reach out to us.

In addition to the convenience of shipping products straight to you, we’ve invested a lot of time, effort, and resources into making our website easy to find and use. Even though this seems like a small thing, it’s amazing how rare well-designed websites are in today’s high-tech world.

We feel that it is important to make every process as seamless and helpful as possible, including how you interact with our website, and it shows with how happy our customers have been.

However, even though we’ve done a great job of making our website easy to use, we’re always looking for feedback on what is the most valuable to you and on how we can make improvements.

We’d love to hear from you on what you'd like to see more or less of. If you have anything to share with us, please feel free to leave a comment at the bottom of any of our blog posts OR you can send us a private message.

Solution 2: Create Better Resources For You

In addition to making our website user-friendly, we also strive to provide as much relevant information about each product as we can (and we’re adding more all the time!)

We create both basic & advanced templated resources that help you quickly easily understand your new equipment.

What we’re aiming for is to turn this type of user manual…

Boring User Manual - Telescope

…into a completely enjoyable user manual experience (more to come on this in the future).

In the end, our goal is to make sure you can count on us whenever you have a question about how to attach your solar filter or are troubleshooting an issue with your wind warning system.

Over time, we’ll also be creating a series of tutorials to better help you understand the complexities of these pieces of equipment and navigate the industry in general.

Ultimately, we want to do everything we can to make sure you have a great experience with us online.

Solution 3: Overhaul and Surpass Your Customer Service Expectations

This point is a bit subjective but it is also an important discussion to have.

We want to create an amazing customer service experience so that you and our other customers will remain with us over the long-term.

We are here to help you every step of the way so that you don't have to worry about being left on your own.

Eventually, we hope that our relationship with you will progress to the point you see us as a partner instead of just a company you buy stuff from.

This is the type of experience we’re working to create for you.

In a nutshell, here are some of the things we’re committed to doing in order to make your experience incredible:

  • We’ll continue to make our website clean, easy, and fun to use complete with an intuitive interface and a simple navigation so that it’s easy to find what you want and checkout.
  • We won’t just sell products to you. We also provide many free training materials through posts on the Sky & Space blog and through the Sky & Space Academy.
  • We’ll always be adding new information to the products we offer so that you have as much information as possible before you purchase anything.
  • We’ll talk to you in layman’s terms. We’ll cut through the complicated speech that comes with many parts of the industry and break it down to where you can easily understand it.
  • We’ll continue to go to great lengths to be accessible by implementing a good customer support system. You can ask us questions on any of our blog posts, social media channels, or any of the methods on our contact page and we’ll (typically) get back with you in 24 hours or less.

This type of dedication is something you won't find anywhere else in this industry.

And we absolutely love being part of it!

Solution 4: Give You Access To A Much Larger Product Selection

We don't want you to have to chase all over creation to find what you're looking for so we've done the heavy lifting for you.

Instead of only supplying a few select products, we're shooting for the stars (pun intended) by working to supply you with hundreds or even thousands of product options so that you can get exactly what you want.

We're working to provide access to hundreds or even thousands of product options so you can get exactly what you want.

To do this, we're constantly reaching out to new suppliers and manufacturers to add additional products into our Store so that you can you get what you want on the first try.

This means no more exhausting research to find the right piece of equipment.

Wherever possible, we've brought it all together for you in one central place for easy, convenient access.

On top of all of that, we're creating some of our own products in-house to continue to address the ever-evolving needs of our astronomers and weather enthusiasts. Don't be surprised to see ebooks, courses, training materials, and more in the future.

Important Note: if we don't have something you're looking for, please let us know and we'll reach out to the supplier or manufacturer to see if we can stock it.

We cannot guarantee we'll be able to make it happen, but we'll do everything in our power to get you what you're looking for.

To submit a request, simply fill out our Product Request Form to let us know what you'd like us to add.

This form can be used to submit any type of product request including our in-house digital products such as our ebooks, courses, and more.

An Important Note About Our Customer Satisfaction Guidelines

As you can imagine, the 4 goals we have require a monumental effort to setup and maintain. As we pursue these ambitious goals, it’s of paramount importance for us to make sure you aren’t left by the wayside.

In all of our efforts to help you get easy access to products online, we’ve implemented these 3 critical customer satisfaction guidelines for ourselves:

  1. 1
It’s very important to us to not be annoying about buying anything from us. Sure, we’re a business and we have to make money to stay in business but we’re more concerned with creating real value for you by providing relevant information, trainings, and product recommendations in addition to selling things.
  2. 2
We always adhere to customer service best practices. We never use any black-hat or distasteful business practices. We’re simply better than that.
  3. 3
We value your privacy and will never sell your information to anyone for any reason. Ever. For more information, please see our Privacy Policy.

If at any point you feel that we need to work on one or more of these areas, please reach out to us immediately and let us know (we always welcome the feedback!)

My Top Recommendation For You

Now, there are hundreds of details we’ll need to investigate, discuss, fix, test, and validate before we’ll be able to accomplish these 4 goals.

Along the way, I’m sure you’ll want to be kept in the loop as to what we’re working on and give your input into how we go about solving these problems.

However, if you never know about the newest features, blog posts, courses, and other things that we release, you’ll never be able to provide your input.

As such, my top recommendation to you is to sign up to receive the Sky & Space Products Newsletter. If you didn't already sign up before, here's the sign up form again:

By registering for the newsletter, you’ll receive an email notification each time we release something new on the Sky & Space blog that we think you’ll want to know about.

OUR PROMISE: We hope that our newsletter will be an invaluable resource for you, but if you decide that is is no longer worth receiving the emails, you can unsubscribe anytime with no red tape involved.

In addition, we value your privacy and will never sell your personal information or spam you. EVER.

Quick Recap

We’ve covered a lot in this post so here’s a quick summary of everything we discussed.
